Race to the Lodge

I woke up laughing. My dry lips curled into a smile and I lay on my right side chuckling away at my dream. I woke Kane up and he asked what was so funny. I told him. He did not laugh. I don't blame him; you had to be there.

I was working at a restaurant with some friends. It was the end of the shift and we were cleaning everything up. Actually, it was a bit of an episode of Scrubs and Elliot was one of the other waitresses. A group of her customers was all mad that she had gotten their bill wrong. I tried to help by telling her and asking her to re-do the check.

At the end of our shift we were all going to like a Tony Bennett concert or something across the street. We all needed to change and there was a small wooden lodge out back where we could do that. It had wooden verandas all around it and ramps up to the glass front doors. We were all running toward the lodge to claim a good area to change.

Just then, children started pouring out of the back of the restaurant; they also were running for the lodge and needed to change. It was like a class full of 2nd graders or something, all button noses and corduroy jackets. We all freaked - we had to beat them in!

That's when I turned to see Turk stopping in-place to change. He was putting a pair of pants on over the pair he already had on. I didn't know why exactly he was doing this, but I kept running. A couple of my colleagues had fallen behind and I looked to see Trevor, Shak (our friend, Shakib, from college, not Shaq the basketball player) and a couple other boys from college sitting outside the lodge at a picnic table all eating some food and cheering us on.

I was now in the lead to the cabin, but my running skills were even worse in my dream than in real life. I was in freaking slow motion. The children started to pass me. I had to make a decision and so I reached my right arm out, bent down, and tripped the first little blond booger who made it past me. He plummeted face first into the deck; I was smiling.

That's when I started to laugh in real life. I had tripped a child so that I could beat him in a race. Trevor and my friends were laughing so hard behind me that I burst out laughing in real life. The laughter woke me up and spoiled the dream, but I was going to trip more of them, I already knew it. It was fabulous.

Digging Up the Bowling Alley

Time travel, action, adventure, nail polish – this dream has it all! Kane and I had traveled back in time about three days (lame, I know) to the beginning of an endeavor my family was taking on to find the hidden passages under Holiday Bowl.

This was some sort of treasure hunt with an unknown prize waiting for us when the right area of the intricate catacombs was found, all Indiana Jones style. And there was action too – some sort of time limit was imposed upon us, some impending doom, some threat to be neutralized with these activities. We were archaeologists digging up the tunnels of the past while being spurred on by the vague yet imminent threats of the present!

The men-folk of my family were alternately digging/exploring the passageways and discussing/planning strategies for where to dig next. The Bowling Alley was not actually the facility in Hayward that we all know and love, but rather some other building, most of which I didn't get the chance to see in the dream.

My dad and uncle Jerry were standing outside the entrance to the underground excavations; they had taken a right turn once they had breached the surface and Kane and I were frustrated because we knew that the good stuff was to the left (since we were from the not-so-distant future and all). But they had found hobos living in some of the underground tunnels and they had thought this meant they were going the right way. I love how dreams make sense.

I was doing a bit of waiting around with some of the women-folk inside the building during these extensive excavations. My mom, all of a sudden, decided to start doing my nails. I have only had my nails done twice (and it certainly wasn't by my mom), and I hated it. But she wasn't hurting me at all so I let her continue.

About halfway through the manicure, she let one of the previous secretaries from Thom Hume's office, Kellene, take over. Kellene did my nails the rest of the way putting acrylics on (though they weren't as bulky and awful as the ones I had gotten for senior prom) and painting them a tasteful clear color. She then tried to put awful sparkly jewel things on every nail (the kind you sometimes see people wear on their pinky or thumb nail, if you're keen on contemporary nail design) which I was not happy about. But she sort of whined until I let her, so I had a diamond-ish gem on my thumb, the number '7' on my first finger and a slew of sparkles on my pinkies. Way to muck it all up, Kellene.

So that was it, and despite being knowledgeable time travelers, we had an obligation to follow a sort of skewed version of the Prime Directive and couldn't help our fam find the treasure. So, treasure-less and tacky-nailed, I awoke to another day.

Hotel Vandals

We're staying in a hotel at the moment, but the hotel in my dream was slightly different. It was far nicer than the one we're actually in – dang. Kane and I had gone to some party in the hotel lobby and had returned to our room late. It was 1am and we were just turning in for bed, reading our books. That's when I heard a shuffle outside our door and someone trying to get in with a key card.

It sounded like a family, children and all. Their key cards weren't working, which I was thankful for. Kane and I glanced at each other and then I went to answer the subsequent knocking at the door. When I opened the door, a woman holding a small girl, a man, and a small boy barged in the room in a big fumble of confusion and talking. I stared, confused, at them and asked them what they were doing. They rushed into the bathroom at the back of the room, insisting this was their room. I assured them it was not, but they insisted. I didn't exactly know what do to.

I looked at Kane and he told them, no, this was not their room or else their key cards would have worked. This was room 211, perhaps they had read the numbers wrong. They were insisting still as they fumbled around our room. It was odd with the kids there because we didn't exactly want to start a confrontation with children around. I don't remember if I just waited until they left or if I ran straight to the reception desk for help, but when I arrived at reception and told the woman there what had happened, she assured me that the family were thieves.

I was shocked. She said that this happens often. They steal your valuables while you're confused as they rush in. The woman handed me something and told me that the authorities had retrieved this from what the family had taken from us: it was a light brown bar of soap shaped like a grand piano, still shrink wrapped. I was relieved that this was all they were able to acquire from our bathroom. Then she informed me that they probably also stole more stuff but they weren't able to retrieve it. I replayed their steps around our room in my head and wondered if they got my wallet or our passports.

I felt really stupid for falling for some con; I tend to be very cautious about things like that and am typically very good at reading people. It was very odd and alarming.

Thanksgiving Horrors

Thanksgiving has become a trying time for my family, I will admit. My aunt used to do all the cooking but she has recently come into bad health and is no longer able. Everyone else in the family refuses to go out to dinner for reasons that I don't understand at all. They want a home cooked meal, which I can understand, but refuse to go out on pain of not seeing each other for the holiday. It baffles me.

Anyway, so the last few Thanksgivings have been a bit of a battle: the people who want a nice dinner out just to spend time together even if it's not over a perfectly home-cooked meal, versus the people who refuse to eat anything but 6 tons of home-made turkey, potatoes, yams, etc. And apparently my anxiety about it has bled into my dreams.

In my dream from about a week ago, I was cooking Thanksgiving dinner. In real life I have never done anything of the sort and would certainly not attempt to for my highly expectant family for my first try. I don't even eat meat for goodness sake! But, despite this, I found myself slaving away in the kitchen (of my mom's house) preparing this epic meal for my family.

I was making a turkey even though I don't know how. Everyone was already there which meant that I was supposed to be further along than I was. I was sweating. I was stressed. My uncle Jeff was complaining that I didn't have enough appetizers out on the table for them to eat. Then I realized that I had forgotten to buy potatoes and yams. The irony is that I had forgotten to buy these staple foods because I had focused my energy on getting good appetizers, which apparently weren't good enough.

So I had to rush out to get potatoes and yams even though I was woefully behind schedule. No one was helping me. As I dashed out the door, my mom laughed at me telling me that she used to even do all this (correctly) and serve venison for Thanksgiving. I have no idea what she was talking about, we've never had venison.

Swim Meet

Had another high school dream last night, these happen often. I was at some sort of restaurant and it was the middle of the afternoon, between school being let out and the start of a swim meet (there usually is no time between these events, but welcome to my dream world). My friends and some of my family were at the restaurant, and there was some sort of a performance going on. I was trying to get out of there because I had to poo and because the meet was about to start. No idea why I had a dream where I had to poo, I didn't have to poo in real life or anything. Hope you're ok with me discussing poo.

I was trying to leave the restaurant but people kept talking to me and my aunt was hitting me with a pillow, which she thought was hilarious (not very characteristic of my aunt). I finally got away and rushed over to where the swim meet was and went down into the locker room to change. I was a bit irritated, as I always was, since I was in the first and last events of the meet, meaning I had to be there (and soaking wet) for the entire meet. Some other people had stayed at the restaurant since their events didn't start until halfway through the meet. Grrr!

In the locker room I found the toilets and went poo (you're so happy to hear about it), but the toilets were little glass pods where you can't stand up and you can see into adjacent pods. I was not happy about this so I left a bit early to go change.

I was swimming the medley relay, as always (the first event), and we had our old kick-ass JV team together. Kyla was doing back, I don't remember who was doing breast, a girl who I don't remember her name was doing fly, and I was bringing it in with freestyle (it was a good team, trust me). I was putting on my suit and realized that it was my 2 piece bikini that I have now, which would surely fall off as soon as I jumped in the water. In fact, our whole team was in bikinis and I was wondering what was going on.

I was searching for a more appropriate bathing suit top (like a Nike suit top) to wear over my bikini so it didn't fall off in the water, but I was having no luck. No one else seemed to be worried about this inevitabilily. Kyla was joking about how our coach should use this lineup in the meet next week against Mt. Eden High, which would be mean since their team was always horrible. Typically (in real life) our coach would give the lesser swimmers a try at meets against Mt. Eden since there was no way they could beat us, but Kyla really wanted to kick their butts hard for some reason.

We never did get in the water, my alarm woke me up!

Carissa and My Big Trip

Dreamed Night of August 1

Two dreams last night, both very vivid. The first was a Planet Lazer dream that started out with me arriving at PL from Carissa's wedding. Something had gone wrong with the food at her wedding and I hadn't gotten anything to eat. So I was going to eat something before I played some laser tag. As I sat down to eat a burger or something, Carissa and Elijah showed up. I felt instantly guilty since I was eating just after their wedding where they had supposedly fed me, but it turns out they were also hungry since they hadn't had the chance to eat either. So we sat down to some food together. Then I went to go play a game of laser tag.

Jason Green was there and said I could get into the league game that was going on. Which doesn't make any sense; you can't very well switch players in/out in a league game, but I went in to play anyway. There were about 20 people in the game and Tony was trying to explain the rules to me, since they were different for this league game than in a normal game. You had to shoot people in a certain order since each person was worth a different point value based on the card they had pulled from a deck. I was trying to understand and, thinking I knew what he was saying, summarized the rules back to him: each person is worth a value depending on how high of a card they get (ace high, twos the lowest, etc) so you want to eliminate the highest value people first. He said, no, that's not it at all. And it was too complicated for me to figure out, so they played without me. I was befuddled since I am rarely confused so easily. And I didn't get to play!

In my next dream I had just flown to Brazil to do a tour around Australia. In the dream, Australia was smooshed onto the bottom part of South America, so the tour started in Brazil and then went south into Australia. I had signed up to do this tour by myself for some reason and was nervous about doing such a big trip without anyone I knew. There were about a dozen other people on the trip and they all had proper backpacking gear like tents and lamps and rain gear which was making me even more nervous since I only had the stuff that I'm traveling with right now (no sleeping bag, a bunch of dirty clothes, no tents or gear or anything).

After a sort of orientation where the guide told us we'd be hiking all the way there, an average of 100 km per day, I was thinking of backing out of the trip. But I'd already flown to Brazil and it was only a week long tour and I was imagining how proud I would be of myself if I could do it. I was still waffling on the matter when I awoke.

Jammin'

Dreamed Wednesday Night July 15

I was walking around outside a one story house with my acoustic guitar strapped around my shoulder. I had been playing someone else's guitar but their strings were made of something strange and almost no sound would come out when they were plucked. So I switched to my own guitar even though the strings are hard to press down and hurt my fingers after a short while (true in real life).

I was just screwing around playing some chords when Patrick came out of the house and was super excited to jam. As usual, I was reluctant to "jam" since I never know what to play when we do that. My mom was there for a minute, and she made fun of me for playing my guitar so rarely. I was offended and told her something along the lines of "shut up". Not a nice dream exchange, sorry about that mom.

Instead of jamming, he played me a song he'd been working on and I think I was expected to add something to it. I have never been good at lead guitar and was trying to think of something I could add to the song. He was playing me the song from a recording that sounded completely finished so it was extra hard to try to add something. I then realized that the song resembled a song I had heard before: Wounded Bird by The Black Crowes. I told him that his song reminded me of theirs and he alarmingly asked me to find that CD and play him the song.

I flipped through Patrick's CD collection for The Black Crowes' section, which was at the back. His six or so TBC CD's were tubes of lotion. I picked the right tube and squished some of the lotion into the CD player to play him the song. I asked him why his CD's were in tubes and he said that if you ask the cook at the store, he'll sell you the CD's for 70% of the price in tube form.

I woke up with Wounded Bird stuck in my head.

Work Exercise Day

Dreamed Saturday Night July 11

Yep, I had two dreams this night. Well, probably more, but two memorable ones. I went back to sleep after Murderers, below, and had another vivid dream straight after. That's the way you do it right there.

This time I was back at work at my Australian engineering firm, BHS, and I was on site at a job with my boss, David. I don't remember it all now, but we were inspecting the concrete piers and columns at this particular site and, though I was having my classic eyelids-constantly-falling-shut affliction, I noticed a huge blunder by the builder.

To summarize using engineering jargon (sorry): the drilled piers were installed and the columns were poured but were done separately, like precast elements. The columns were supposed to sit directly above the piers with continuous vertical reinforcement, but the contractor was instead just setting the precast columns on top of the piles. Without the continuous reinforcement the columns would have no lateral capacity at all and, basically, this was a massive mistake that we needed to call attention to.

I was trying to tell my boss David about it but he was just walking away obviously trying to overlook the error (which is very unlike him, I might add). Anyway, I followed him into the building trying to talk to him about it, but it was apparently exercise day at work. A few times when we worked at BHS (in real life) we played company basketball at lunch with the six or so of us who would play. It was fun.

So we were supposed to get dressed for basketball or swimming or some sport to play together. Alicia was there and she was all nervous about playing sports with us, which I found odd since she posts to an exercise-based blog almost daily (which I read) and I would think she would love to play random team sports. Nevermind that I have no idea why she was at my engineering company in Australia. Shaun O'neil was also there to hang out and play with us. No idea why completely random people end up all smooshed together in my dreams.

Murderers

Dreamed Saturday July 11

I was with Kane but it wasn't Kane. Good start, I know. We were partners in crime, but he looked different than he does in real life. This was one of my famous (ha) long and involved dreams that was a bit like a movie. We were on the run from the cops; we were murderers. I don't know what spawned this dream as I haven't even watched any violent movies lately or played in video games. Hamlet 2 and Yes Man didn't exactly fill me with thoughts of murdering people, but that's what I got anyway.

I don't remember it all so vividly since it was a wake-up-at-6am-to-stop-the-horror type of dream, but I do remember the gist of it. We were on the run from the cops, presumably for murdering people. I have no idea why we were killing these people but it was necessary for some reason. The first "scene" was us pulling over to the side of the road and me beheading a woman in the bushes. It was graphic and, besides the screaming that I would imagine would have been present in real life, seemed relatively realistic.

I had a machete and was hacking this woman's head off. Yeah, I know, I'm disturbed. Instead of slitting her throat which would have gotten the job done a lot quicker, I had decided to start from the back of her neck. As you might imagine, a machete didn't get the job done in one or two or even three hits, so instead I was repeatedly slicing at this woman's neck from behind as she became more and more bloody and disoriented.

After the job was done, we hopped in our car and moved on to the next victim which was a man in his house. I killed him (though later he was prosecuting us and we had apparently just chopped off his thumb) and then even went downstairs to guide his daughter, with kind words, out to the pool behind his house to avoid her seeing him and calling the cops on us for a while.

We drove more and killed more and the cops got closer and closer. It was really tense and one of those dreams you're happy to wake up from. No idea what is wrong with my brain.

Showering

This was a truly irritating dream. I have ones like this sometimes that just become obsessive and ridiculous as my brain leads me all around. In this dream I was just trying to take a shower. I was camping or on vacation or something and it was time for me to tend to the good old hygiene. I started by looking for a shower in the campground I was in and, though there were about a dozen in an out building, they were all being used.

I found an empty one but there were spider webs all on the ceiling that were encroaching down into the shower space. I wasn't going to have any of that. I thought I'd wait for someone to finish but everyone was like in infinite shower mode, go figure. I found a shower that looked perfect, so I entered, undressed and started to shower. At this point I realized that it was not a personal shower but rather one used to rinse off after using the hot tub to which it was attached. The people in the hot tub were staring at me.

I grabbed my towel and wrapped it around myself and exited the shower/hot tub area getting my towel all wet and feeling ridiculous. I asked a girl who worked at the place if she knew a good place to shower. She showed me to a place she called "the tube" or "the tunnel" or something where there were some showers in an open wood building. I set up my stuff in the little area and then went away for a minute to use the toilet or something. When I came back people had set up an archery range with the target being just next to the shower heads. So groups of people were lining up with their bows and firing arrows into targets where I was hoping to shower.

I was extremely surprised at this development, but not nearly as surprised as I would have been in real life. I mean, archery? Anyway, I never got to shower in my dream and was waiting, dejectedly, for the stupid archers to finish as my mind faded elsewhere.
