Changing Realities

I had a really terrifying dream last night. Unfortunately, it was the kind that doesn't sound terrifying at all, but you just have to trust me that it was very frightening and quite exhausting. For the first part, I was the main character. I had received a card, like a comic or baseball card, with some info on it. It told me to take the card to the top of a hill where there was a castle (I was on some fairy island or something). I took the card to the castle and exchanged it for another card, not really knowing what I was doing. The man who exchanged my card looked very sinister, like Jafar from Aladdin. He also cracked my camera which was the 110 film, flat rectangular one (like this) I had when I was a kid - what a jerk.

Something about the new card meant that something bad was supposed to happen to me (oooh, cryptic predictions - terrifying!). I saw people jumping off the cliffs around the castle as I descended back down the mountain, but I did not have the urge to join them, which I sensed was to Jafar's dismay. When I got to the bottom of the mountain I swam with some friends in a huge, clear, beautiful, tropical lagoon. It was like the most perfect Bahamas location ever; the water was warm and shallow and clear blue and we were having a great time. I started to take some pictures but my camera was broken.

Suddenly, a couple men attacked me from behind. The were trying to abduct me and were forcibly pushing me underwater. I don't know where my friends went (jerks everywhere in this dream). I had to get away. I swam slightly faster than they did and kept swimming and running with them on my heels the whole way.

Then the dream switched to a movie-style setting where my perspective is through the "camera" and someone else is the star. This happens to me often. The protagonist was a man of about my age. He had straight brown hair and he sort of picked up where I left off with the guys chasing me and the bad omens, etc. He was having other troubles though: his reality kept changing.

This is a constant problem in, say Star Trek TNG*, and, more recently House, and my friend was similarly afflicted. He's in the house and suddenly water starts to seep in under the door at such a rate that he may not be able to get out in time to avoid drowning. Or, not unlike Quantum Leap, one minute he's in the shower or vacuuming or having dinner and the next he's outside a car in a valet uniform with some jerk of a Beamer owner yelling at him to get it together. He can't figure out what's real and it keeps changing and most of the time the visions are of terrifying things.

He even tries to get some help and has a friend take him to some sort of seminar for crazy people. But something just warps the room and he's suddenly somewhere else. He can't tell what's going on. Eventually he just gets sick of it and, as he's backing up in the valet car, he hits the gas hard. He plummets toward the forest behind but the reality changes in time so that he's now in a parking lot headed for a pole. And then it changes again so that he's somewhere else, and keeps barely avoiding catastrophe in this manner.

The dream ended (thank goodness) as my alarm went off in the morning. It was one of those dreams where you wake up all tense and are relieved to find that it was all in your head, a fact that somehow - amazingly - had completely escaped your attention until that point. The last vision I had before waking up was a close-up of the man's face. He had crazy clown makeup on - white, red, blue - and his eyes were huge and had fake light blue contacts. He was shaking and shouting gibberish; he had gone completely crazy.

*Like the one where Worf is switching realities and first he notices the cake changed flavors, then he only got 3rd in the Batleth tournament, then Riker's captain, then he's married to Deanna! Then all the Enterprises start appearing and they (Data) calculate that in 32 hours or something the whole galazy will be completely filled with Enterprises!!!! You know you remember that episode.

Giraffe Nose

It's so hard to figure which dreams I want to blog about. I seriously have dozens every night and I typically wake up in a state of groggy confusion, trying to sort out what's happening in my real life and what was dream. It's always the boring stuff that's my real life. No giraffes here.

I typically wait until I have a particularly clear and concise dream to blog about it. It's the only way I can hope to keep anyone entertained at all, not to say that anyone reads this. In defiance of these qualifications, I wanted to mention that I had a dream the other night where I got to pet a giraffe's nose. I was in some sort of pod or roller coaster car or something which was placed at such a height that I was level with a giraffe's head.

I asked whoever the guide person was if the giraffe would bite me and I was informed that he would not. He (the giraffe) looked toward me and I pet his nose between his nostrils. It was exactly as soft and warm and squishy as a horse's nose. It was so delightful that I have remembered it for many days since. Now I want to pet a giraffe.

Volcano Vacation

Dreamed: Friday night May 8

I've been sleeping very oddly this last week - my sleep patterns seem to come in weekly batches. Sometimes I sleep like a damn rock. I plunge immediately into the depths of unconsciousness at night and am groggily wrenched from this state with the morning alarm. Other times I am more fitful and toss around semi-conscious throughout the night. Other times I awaken more readily at the alarm, approaching the behavior of a normal person. This week I slept well but woke up with a mild headache 5 minutes before my alarm each day. The reason I kept waking up just before the alarm is because my dreams kept ending, like a movie. The dreams stop and my mind is like, uh, I guess we wake up now? It's all quite odd.

I've gotten some really good ones in this week but have essentially been too lazy to document them. I know, you're heartbroken because you've been watching the blog feverishly. Oh wait, no one cares about my dreams, I forgot.

Last night I had two memorable dreams - my body awoke at 7am this morning just after the end of crazy kangaroo dream, then went back to sleep for this one. My sister had come to visit me in this dream, and we went out together to explore the city together. It wasn't exactly Melbourne, but I think it was close. We were waiting at a tram stop when the station itself started to drift carelessly down the tram tracks. It was a very tiny platform, so we just stayed on since it seemed to be heading in the direction we wanted to go.

We arrived downtown - which was a normal city with tall buildings, etc built adjacent a sweet lake or river across from beautiful mountains. The water's edge was a nice place to walk with parks and restaurants (completely fictional, of course), so we started to meander. A few minutes into our walk I looked up to see a huge silvery blob high up in the air plummeting down into the park behind us. It looked like an airborne avalanche of snow*, but for some reason I knew it was the volcano across the river erupting.

Down the esplanade I could see lava consuming the pavement and anything in its path. It was coming our way. I was completely panicked. I thought we should run but I realized that if even the river of lava so much as brushed our legs we'd be done for. It was a matter of being lucky enough not to be right where the lava was flowing.

Fortunately, this city (I think it was Hawaii actually) was used to this sort of disruption and the lava/fires were promptly tended to and business continued as usual. Apparently the volcano wasn't too serious this time and no one seemed to mind.

*It was moving in slow motion - I just saw the new Star Trek movie last night.

Haircut Nightmare

Dreamed: Friday Night April 24

I'm getting a haircut soon, in real life, so this was an obvious reflection of my feelings toward this event.

I went to get a haircut somewhere and they shaved the front half of my head and left the back long. Not like a mullet, like a freak haircut you've never seen before because it's too ugly to exist in reality. Wait a minute - god damn it - I love the internet, here is the haircut I'm talking about. But imagine it's me and the back part is my super long blond hair. I wasn't all that upset really, but I did need the rest of the hair cut because bald me is better than that, let's face it. So I'm walking around this town with whoever happened to be with me trying to find a hair cutting place that's open.

It was approaching dusk so places were all closed or closing. I found one place that was just closing and the effeminate receptionist man (I even stereotype in my dreams, imagine that) informed me that the owner/main stylist could cut my hair. I thought this would probably be expensive, but didn't ask about it. He came out of the back and started to cut without even asking me what I wanted. He was also rather flamboyant.

When he was done, I had my front hair back, somehow (Brittany Spears' stylist?) but he had given me this goofy shoulder length bob cut that made me look like a 1950's mom. I was displeased with this for some reason and left.

This was actually part of a much larger dream where I had to get to some high school dance that night but didn't have a dress to wear or (obviously) an appropriate haircut. It was a bit stressful and I ended up at some antisocial guy's house party where my dad was going on and on about how he can fit into size 30 jeans now. I watched him parade around in his tiny jeans and wondered how that was possible since I don't even think I wear that small.

Magnets on Mars

Dreamed: Thursday Night April 23

I knew the spaceman had affected me in some profound subliminal way. He was there, on the corner of Swanston and Bourke, standing on a pedestal at 9pm on a Thursday. I was fascinated by his glowing necklaces and space-noise-making instrument that must have been something like a theremin. He played away on the cold, clear night: space noises to slow, deliberate techno music. I wondered if he enjoyed his profession/hobby.

And then I find myself on Mars in my dream that night. How creative. I did, however, add a little Angie tinge to it: Alana and I were on our way home from our Mars vacation and were passing through the gift shop on the way out (yes, capitalism exists on Mars too). I remembered my robust souvenir collection on the fridge at home and decide that I must purchase a magnet as a memento of our trip. I view the magnet selection and am dismayed at the offerings. None of them even show the Mars landscape! They show stupid things that are unrelated; I can remember one with a blurry picture of a cactus on it. There aren't cacti on Mars!

So I thought, ok, let's get a different keepsake. I saw some sort of primitive playing cards in a glass case which were supposed to be some sort of artifact from early Mars history or something. I thought that sounded cool and went to ask someone to open the case. When I came back to select my card, the one I wanted was gone; someone else had purchased it. It was the only cheap one, so I was pissed (it was $37 - the others were all over $100). I'm not sure how this crisis was solved, but Alana was very patient through all this.

Axes to the Windows

Dreamed: Saturday Night April 18

This morning was one of many where I wake up rather pleasantly exhausted from a barrage of trying dreams. These dreams were the kind that fly through my brain back to back, one leading to the next often connected only by a very thin thread. The most memorable dream is as follows:

I was at my mom's house which was in the correct geographical spot, but had a different floor plan than my mom's real house. There was an expansive porch to the front of the house, about where the garage is, and the whole front of the house was glass windows. It was quite nice. Anyway, Melissa and her family lived across the street where Patrick's mom lives. Melissa's brother Seth was over and he wanted to make out with me. I said that I couldn't because I had a boyfriend and he got all mad and left.

He returned after a while with Melissa, both wielding rad battle axes (kinda like this). They were mad and I walked out onto the porch to talk to them. They were going to bash my mom's windows with their axes. I asked Melissa not to but she said something like, "I'm feeling crazy right now!". I was significantly bigger than she was in the dream, so I decided to try to take the ax from her. I grabbed and tugged, but couldn't pry it from her. So, I did what any reasonable dream person would do: I gave up and went back in the house.

They started bashing the windows. But the axes would stick in the glass like it was wood rather than just shatter the glass. They swung their axes over and over. My parents were there, and I said something like, "It's ok, they're just mad, they'll stop soon". I should have realized it was a dream when my dad accepted this as a valid answer and did not rush off to conjure a weapon. We watched them for a few minutes and I was thinking that the damages would be expensive to fix. They were not stopping and now more of their friends had arrived and there was a bit of a riot happening outside.

I decided to call the police. I called, but they were being idiots, as police typically are in my dreams. They couldn't trace the call so they couldn't find the address - even though I was offering to just tell them. They finally said someone would be on the way.

This dream then started bleeding into other strange scenarios including a dock and kittens and a puppy, and eventually a short feature film with submarine-capable, child-drowning robot heroes-turned-villains, so I will stop here. The police eventually did show up, but it was way too late and I was pissed that they didn't show up more quickly because they could have saved me a lot of repairs to the house.

Christina and Allison

Dreamed: Thursday Night April 16

This dream started out when I got "drafted" to play on the school football team. Once again, another high school-ish dream, but this one was not at my actual high school. I told them, matter of factly, that I didn't even know how to play football and that I would most certainly be a liability to their team. We were playing against another team of boys for goodness sake! I'm not terribly dainty (or graceful, let's face it), but serious football is not my cup of tea. I put on the outfit and the helmet and sat on the bench and hoped they would not call me in. They did not.

After the "game", I went to kick it at Christina Herczeg's house. This was not any house I've ever been to in real life. We were just hanging out in the way that teenagers do -- without actually doing anything in particular. Her mom was hanging around and she was a cool, hip mom (not her mom in real life - no disrespect intended). Allison Reid showed up and we all were hanging out. Allison had bangs and a really long dirty blond braid in her hair. I wore a braid in my hair today in real life in honor of this (or because I was jealous, one of the two).

Christina's mom decided to take us on a car ride somewhere with some other mom. Two moms in the front seat, we three girls in the back. It was rainy outside and as we were driving to wherever we were going, I realized that I had to be back home soon for something. I asked her to take me home but she said not yet. Stupid grown ups.

They finally dropped the three of us off in town somewhere and Allison got a smoothie at a drive through (even though we were walking - crazy!). It was still raining outside and I started to make my way home.

Crossword Puzzle Test

Dreamed: Wednesday Night April 8

I was taking a test, like in school. Oh yeah, aren't school dreams always fun? Why am I never living it up in school dreams? Like skipping class and wearing awesome clothes and hanging with all my rad friends? No, I'm always pants-less or didn't study for a test or am suddenly on stage in a play that I don't know anything about. I digress.

I was in a class taking a test. It was a one page test, front and back. Like two minutes after we receive the tests, Shaun O'neil (resident smart kid at our high school, sorry Jon) returns the test to the teacher - finished. I was thinking, ok, if Shaun did it in 2 mins, I should have no problem finishing in time. I am a freaking genius, after all, even if a 2nd class one.

I finish the test, but realize there's a crossword on the back. That's weird, but I should be able to manage. The clues are on the front while the part you fill in is on the back - already irritating. The puzzle doesn't make any sense. It does not follow regular cross word puzzle rules that people in the world are familiar with. I could not figure how Shaun would have finished so fast.

I'm getting stressed - there's no way I can finish this in time, the thing makes no sense! And then the dream got odd and I find a fish or some sort of sea creature struggling for life on a shelf in a bedroom and I decide that I should bring this creature back to class and offer it to the teacher in exchange for my botched crossword puzzle test. The creature turns out to be a mermaid. I'm not sure if the teacher counted it toward my grade or not.

General Ranting

My dreams have been insane lately. Worse than normal. Almost every night for about the past week has been an exhausting whirlwind of maniacal dreaming. My sister was eaten by a shark the size of a blue whale (don't worry she was spat back out and I rescued her from the edge of the water). I had redundant and relentless work dreams last Friday (and Friday night too - how mean!). My high school friends and I crammed into a car old school style and I protested, laughing, as we went to pick up Carissa who was going to be like the 5th person in the back seat (I'm so glad grown ups don't cram into cars like teenagers do, I'm so over being squished into economy cars with my beloved, giggly peers).

Of course, these are just a fleeting few of my dreams that shake off within minutes (though sometimes last days) after waking up. I haven't had a good fluid one to blog about recently (except maybe the shark one, but I got lazy) and so you've been sadly neglected (pretending like I have readers is fun!).

I do find it odd how my dreams seem to come in phases. This blog hasn't been around long enough (nor does anyone read it frequently enough anyway) to realize these trends, but I know it to be true. A few years ago I had dreams about the Harris' in one form or another almost every night for months. They were just there. I was at their house or one of them was walking through a field with me - whatever. They still tend to float through a dream every now and again. I've done the same thing with seemingly random people from my past, most notably Alicia, Scott Taylor, and Karen Wong (now Rangel). When I was in Europe in 2001, I had a dream with Patrick in it almost every night. Vida Soto has been a recent addition to the odd cameos. I have no idea why.

The funny thing is, it's often the people I'm closest to who never appear in my dreams. Kane is rarely there. My mom hardly makes an appearance, though my dad does a bit more frequently. Jon is rarely amongst the posse of faceless "friends" I'm toting around. Marc and Alana, our most awesome Australia friends, who we have hung out with just about every weekend for a year have never made an appearance that I can think of. It's like my brain only has access to select yearbook pages from grades 3-12 to look at. I have no explanation.

Hopefully I can get a good one soon. I'm the only one who loves this blog, and I'm ok with that.

Tattoo Me

Dreamed: Wednesday Night March 25

I don't remember much about this dream, but I do remember that I had a handful of rad tattoos. I've always respected a well-placed and interesting tattoo*, as long as it's on someone else. I don't have anything that I'm excited about enough, nor can I envision a part of my body that will not someday be fat or wrinkly or both and where I could happily nestle a tattoo. Would I be a small tattoo person? Small, cute, hardly any harm? Or would I be all gung-ho about it: if you're going to do it, do it! I'm not really sure, maybe that's part of the reason I don't have one. I'm just not bold enough.

But back to the dream. I was staying in some house, and I'm not sure if it was a friend's house or if I was like a vagabond or what (aren't dreams great that way?) but we all got up in the morning to compare tattoos for some reason. I was the only person who showed up for this ritual, however, so I found myself in the wood-floored hallway with the house dog (small, white, long hair, perky) taking a gander at my own tattoos.

I had about six and they were somehow tastefully placed around my body such that I didn't appear as the "girl with all those tattoos". I had gotten the designs to go in pairs. The pairs of similarly themed tattoos were each done in a certain style or color such that they were related but not the same. The only one I really remember was one all across my lower back, about 4" tall and 12" wide. It was a colorful drawing of horizontal lines with dots and stuff interspersed, somewhat resembling a music staff, but in a magical dreamy sort of way that makes things cooler than they could be in real life. It sort of makes me want a tattoo.

*Note that I equally despise and mock a poorly placed or badly planned tattoo. And I have lukewarm feelings about tattoos that seem all too common (e.x. the ubiquitous "tramp stamp").

Silver Sparkly Bikini

Dreamed: Sunday Night March 15

I was at something like a high school dance. It was taking place in the restaurant of the Bowling Alley (Holiday Bowl) where the tables had been removed and dim lighting now oozed through the room. There weren't many people there but everyone was dressed fancy; I was wearing a big coat. I realized it was rather warm in the room, so went to hang up my coat on a nearby coat rack. As I did so, I looked down to find myself in a sparkly silver bikini type get-up which was apparently supposed to be some sort of contemporary fashion statement. In the real world, I am most often the most conservatively dressed person in any and all situations, so I figured to myself that no one would notice my shimmering blunder. But alas, people did.

Strangers were whistling and saying complimentary but likely derogatory things to me as I walked by. I went to hang back out at whatever DJ or food table was in the center of the room with my "friends" (though I don't remember anyone in particular, except for Shaun O'neil) and was self conscious even though, truth be told, I did look hot.
