Employment

I had a dream that I had a job. How sad is that. I worked in an office and I didn't know any of the people there. It was a standard office, like you see in the movies, in a high rise building with cubicles all around the floor we occupied. I did not know what the company did, nor did I know what my job exactly was.

I had been there for some time and was beginning to think it was odd that no one had trained me or assigned me any tasks. I just sort of walked around all day talking to people and being introduced to new people. I was so excited to look in my purse (I carried one like my sister's purse; a real girlie purse) and find all these pay checks. I had 3 or 4 paychecks, each for about $1700 that I had not yet cashed. I was so excited!

I didn't realize they'd been paying me all this time; I didn't even know what my job was for heaven's sake! It was awesome! I also had some other checks in there from other stuff; I was carrying around like $5000 in checks! I was so excited because I had just bought a camera lens and flash (which I did in real life) and now I had a valid reason to be spending that money...I had actually earned some!

Ok, so this is like the saddest dream ever. I dream of being productive (in a manner of speaking) and of making money. Apparently, I do need a job.

Amputee

This dream has faded a bit (see comic strip on previous entry) but it was pretty serious stuff while it was happening. For starters, it took place a few years ago when I was leaving Thom Hume's office to move to Australia. In real life, I had tried to wrap up any jobs I was working on and/or pass them on to someone else, and generally clean up the office before going. In my dream, Leslie Ronsin was replacing me at work and I was introducing her to everyone and trying to get her started at the office.

I met her in the parking lot and for some reason Anthony, a previous employee at Thom's, was also there. He was also starting work there again and I wondered why. I introduced Leslie to him and it was a bit awkward. Then, I think there was some sort of explosion or something and I was thinking that this was not a good first day of work for Leslie. But then the dream flipped elsewhere.

I had seen Thom come in earlier that morning and he was actually the last one into the office, which was not normal. I noticed he was walking weird and looked very somber. After the explosion happened, everyone else left so I went down some stairs into Thom's office (though it wasn't really Thom's office from real life) and found him sitting on a twin bed looking very distraught. His left leg had been amputated from the knee down.

He had been really upset about having to have the leg removed and hadn't told anyone about it beforehand (except family or whatever). He was very depressed about it and talking about "not being able to go on", etc. I sat down with him and tried to cheer him up. I told him to think about his kids and how they need him and that seemed to help a little bit.

He walked over to the kitchenette in the next room and started fiddling around saying how useless he was now. But all the things he was demonstrating (taking dishes down from high shelves, making food, etc) were things you do with your hands, so I was wondering what the problem was. I told him he still had both hands and was perfectly useful for most things, he just couldn't run anymore. I also realized that he probably couldn't surf, but I didn't point that out (he's big on surfing).

There was no resolution to the dream but it was very realistic and (though a bit boring) very emotional. Glad Thom still has both legs in real life.

Work Exercise Day

Dreamed Saturday Night July 11

Yep, I had two dreams this night. Well, probably more, but two memorable ones. I went back to sleep after Murderers, below, and had another vivid dream straight after. That's the way you do it right there.

This time I was back at work at my Australian engineering firm, BHS, and I was on site at a job with my boss, David. I don't remember it all now, but we were inspecting the concrete piers and columns at this particular site and, though I was having my classic eyelids-constantly-falling-shut affliction, I noticed a huge blunder by the builder.

To summarize using engineering jargon (sorry): the drilled piers were installed and the columns were poured but were done separately, like precast elements. The columns were supposed to sit directly above the piers with continuous vertical reinforcement, but the contractor was instead just setting the precast columns on top of the piles. Without the continuous reinforcement the columns would have no lateral capacity at all and, basically, this was a massive mistake that we needed to call attention to.

I was trying to tell my boss David about it but he was just walking away obviously trying to overlook the error (which is very unlike him, I might add). Anyway, I followed him into the building trying to talk to him about it, but it was apparently exercise day at work. A few times when we worked at BHS (in real life) we played company basketball at lunch with the six or so of us who would play. It was fun.

So we were supposed to get dressed for basketball or swimming or some sport to play together. Alicia was there and she was all nervous about playing sports with us, which I found odd since she posts to an exercise-based blog almost daily (which I read) and I would think she would love to play random team sports. Nevermind that I have no idea why she was at my engineering company in Australia. Shaun O'neil was also there to hang out and play with us. No idea why completely random people end up all smooshed together in my dreams.

Space Buildings

Dreamed: Tuesday Night February 10

I was designing a 20 story steel building in an unknown location. It wasn't supposed to be unknown, I'm just not sure where it was going to be built. I was not enthused about the design thus far. I was going over this mullion design with the architect (mullions are small columns between window panes) and realized that I did not design the mullion for the loads from all the stories above it. For some reason I had only put the weight of the floor directly above onto the member, though I didn't seem to care much.

The architect put my structural information into some fancy computer program he had which made a 3-D cartoon-style drawing of the building. My mullions were shimmering and jiggling in the program, which meant that they were about to buckle which was because I didn't design them right. I was going to fix them at some point and felt a bit stupid for not doing it correctly.

Suddenly I was in space. Like free-floating in the orbit of space looking down on the earth. I was not noticeably in a space suit, nor was I suffocating or falling toward earth. I was looking down onto that building that was now being built down on the earth's surface. Scott Taylor was with me, he was the astronaut who had escorted me into space.

I thought to myself, 'See? Anyone can be an astronaut, you just need to work for other commercial companies rather than NASA'. Scott and I watched as my building was built (for some reason we could see up close on the area where the building was) and as smoke and fire rose up on other parts of the earth. I assume the fire and burning is due to the current fires burning down Victoria, but in my dream they looked more bomb-ish than fire-ey. So it goes.
